You have just arrived in Poland
The first days are chaos: where to register, what to do first, what not to miss. You donโt need to know everything at once โ you just need to do things in the right order.

PESEL and UKR status
PESEL is your number for everything: work, benefits, offices. UKR status gives temporary protection and legal stay. Valid until 4 March 2027 โ after that you need another basis to stay.

Legal work or your own business
On UKR status you can work legally, and your employer registers you in a simpler way. You can also start your own business. The key: keep your work properly registered and documented โ contracts and contributions will matter for your next residence applications.

Many people are on UKR status, while many already hold an ordinary temporary residence permit โ these are two different, largely mutually exclusive paths. Both normally count toward EU residency. Pick the one that fits you.
CUKR card โ from temporary protection to residence
CUKR swaps temporary UKR status for a stable 3-year temporary residence permit โ and starts the clock toward EU residency. Filing window: 4 May 2026 โ 4 Mar 2027.

Temporary residence โ a parallel road
If CUKR doesnโt cover you or expires, thereโs the ordinary temporary residence permit: based on work, study or family. This time also normally counts toward EU residency.

Permanent stay / EU long-term resident
After 5 years of counted residence and meeting the conditions (incl. B1/TELC, income, insurance) you can stay for good. The EU resident permit is indefinite.

Polish citizenship
The final stage of the road. It requires, among other things, a long-enough permanent stay and the state Certificate in Polish โ a different exam from the telc that sufficed for EU residency.
