Profil Zaufany is a free electronic identity issued by the Polish state — it lets you sign and file documents online with MOS (Moduł Obsługi Spraw — the government case-handling portal), ZUS, e-Urząd Skarbowy, e-Doręczenia, and many other services.

Why you really need this. MOS applications — for temporary residence, permanent residence, and the CUKR card — can only be signed with Profil Zaufany, a qualified electronic signature, or a Polish e-ID card (e-dowód, available only to Polish citizens). Without one of these, you simply cannot submit the application — a paper form or a plain email won't help. For most foreigners, Profil Zaufany is the only realistic, free option.

What Profil Zaufany unlocks

One Profil Zaufany account gives you access to, among others: MOS (residence applications, the CUKR card, extensions), PUE ZUS, e-Urząd Skarbowy, e-Doręczenia (your official electronic address), ePUAP, and applications for the 800+ child benefit.

What you need — regardless of the method

RequirementNote for foreigners
PESEL number (can be PESEL UKR)Mandatory — no PESEL, no Profil Zaufany
Valid ID documentA passport is enough
Polish SIM cardSMS codes at login can be unreliable on foreign numbers — buy a Polish prepaid card ahead of time
Email addressAny working address

Three real activation paths

1. Through your Polish bank (fastest). If you have an account at a bank such as PKO BP, Pekao, ING, mBank, or Millennium with your PESEL on file, go to pz.gov.pl, choose "Banki i inni dostawcy" (Banks and other providers), log in as you would to online banking, verify your details against your passport, and confirm with an SMS code. Active within minutes. If your PESEL isn't linked to the account (common if you opened it before you had a PESEL), add it at a branch first.

2. During your gmina visit for PESEL UKR (best for new arrivals). If you're applying for PESEL UKR for the first time, you can request Profil Zaufany activation at the same visit — no separate form, no extra trip. The clerk registers both requests together; your login credentials arrive by email, and the activation code by SMS to your Polish number.

3. Online form + confirmation point (works for anyone with a PESEL). You fill in the application at pz.gov.pl, then have time to visit any punkt potwierdzający (confirmation point — a gmina office, ZUS, a tax office, NFZ, or some consulates) — addresses are listed at pz.gov.pl/pz/confirmationPointAddressesList. There, an officer compares your identity to the application and Profil Zaufany is active immediately. This is the fallback when the bank route doesn't work and you don't have a fresh PESEL UKR registration at the gmina.

The two remaining methods — a qualified electronic signature (paid, roughly 200–400 zł/year) and video verification through the mObywatel app — practically don't apply to this group: video activation requires a Polish e-dowód, which foreigners don't get. You'll still need the mObywatel app itself, though. Once you have Profil Zaufany (for example via Method 2), you'll find in it, from 5 March 2026, the "Dokument ochrony czasowej" (Temporary Protection Document) — the basic, and only, residence document issued to beneficiaries of temporary protection.

Common pitfalls for foreigners

  • Foreign SIM card. Profil Zaufany SMS codes can be unreliable on foreign numbers — buy a Polish prepaid before you start.
  • Name transliteration mismatch. Your Cyrillic name was transliterated to Latin script when your PESEL was issued — the Profil Zaufany form must match the PESEL registry letter for letter, not your passport. Copy the data from your PESEL confirmation printout, not from your passport.
  • PESEL not linked to your bank account. If you opened the account before you had a PESEL, Method 1 will fail at verification — add your PESEL at a bank branch beforehand.
  • Trying video/mObywatel activation without an e-dowód. This path fails from the start — go straight to Method 1, 2, or 3.

Validity and cost

Profil Zaufany is valid for three years and completely free. It does not renew automatically — log in before it expires and confirm the renewal with an SMS code. Otherwise you'll lose access to MOS, ZUS, and e-Doręczenia.

A few closing words

Profil Zaufany costs nothing, and activation takes anywhere from a few minutes to a single afternoon. Set it up before you urgently need it. The CUKR card application — like every MOS application — can only be filed electronically, with the signature Profil Zaufany gives you. If you're just starting your life in Poland, set up Profil Zaufany with Method 2 (gmina + PESEL UKR). If you already have a bank account with your PESEL on file, use Method 1 (bank).

This article is general information, not legal advice. The specific options available to you depend on your citizenship, residence status, and your bank's integration with Profil Zaufany.
